Platinum-Group Basket Derived 5E/6E Aggregate Supply

USGS MCS 2026 reports primary mine supply only for Platinum (170,000 kg) and Palladium (190,000 kg); combined 5E/6E aggregate is not reported in source. An illustrative MiningBridge estimate derived from USGS MCS 2026 Pt/Pd baseline combined with Bushveld Complex Merensky/UG2 prill splits (method: stoichiometric byproduct ore extraction models) yields 374,000 kg 5E/6E aggregate metal, with South Africa controlling 57%.

How concentrated supply is

The Herfindahl-Hirschman index over country shares is 4,006 (highly concentrated). The top three producers hold 90%; 1 country supplies half.

Why platinum-group elements is listed

India's 2023 list of critical minerals names platinum-group elements. A listing is a statement by a government that supply of the material is both economically essential and exposed to disruption, and it is what brings the commodity inside the scope of procurement rules, stockpiling programmes and permitting reform.

Where it is counted in the published statistics

Platinum-group elements is a group rather than a single commodity: it covers iridium, palladium, platinum, rhodium and ruthenium. Of those, palladium and platinum are quantified by producing country and have a supply model of their own. The group as a whole carries no separate production line in the published tables, so the members are where the structure is visible.

What the evidence base does not yet hold

No production series by country is held for platinum-group elements, so there is no supply model for it and no concentration index computed from its own output. Filling that would take mine or refinery output by producing country, ownership and capacity at the separation or refining step and a customs heading that carries it without mixing it into a wider class. Until those exist, everything above is what the public record supports, and nothing on this page is estimated to cover the gap. The paid bands are not offered for platinum-group elements while that remains true.

Contractual Penalty Schedule & Deleterious Limits

Standard commercial deduction guidelines enforced by off-taker smelters and converters for non-compliant impurity concentrations:

Chromite Cr₂O₃ in UG2 concentrate > 3.0% causes furnace hearth buildup ($180/t penalty); Nickel Ni penalty if below payability threshold.

Executive Briefing & Strategic FAQ

Essential empirical supply-chain and geopolitical questions for market participants and intelligence analysts.

3 Key Q&As
Which countries dominate global mining and refining for Platinum Group Metals?▼

Global Platinum Group Metals production is characterized by high geographical concentration in both raw extraction and chemical processing, as documented in MiningBridge's empirical supply-chain models.

What are the critical supply chain bottlenecks and geopolitical risks for Platinum Group Metals?▼

Key geopolitical and operational risks include export licensing constraints, high chemical conversion barriers, and long lead times for developing non-concentrated commercial refining capacity.

What are the primary commercial uses for Platinum Group Metals, and can it be substituted?▼

Platinum Group Metals is essential across energy transition, advanced electronics, and defense systems. While direct substitutes exist in select low-performance applications, replacing Platinum Group Metals in mission-critical hardware incurs significant metallurgical and cost trade-offs.
